Walking Your Dog at Night: 9 Safety Tips to Be Seen and Stay Safe

Once the clocks change, many of us end up walking our dogs before sunrise or after dark. Night walks can be peaceful, but drivers, cyclists and other walkers may not see you until it's too late. Here are nine safety tips for walking your dog at night.

1. Make your dog visible

A dark-coated dog can be nearly invisible at night. An LED light-up collar makes your dog visible from a distance, even on unlit streets.

2. Use reflective walking gear

Reflective stitching on leashes and harnesses bounces back car headlights. Our 6 ft heavy-duty rope leash and no-pull harness both have reflective details.

3. Make yourself visible too

Wear light colors or a reflective vest, and carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp. A light also helps you spot hazards and clean up after your dog.

4. Use a standard leash, not a retractable one

At night, you want your dog close. A fixed-length leash of about 6 feet gives better control than a retractable leash, which can let your dog wander into the road or tangle around a passerby.

5. Stick to familiar, well-lit routes

Walk routes you know well, ideally with sidewalks and streetlights. Save new trails and unlit parks for daylight.

6. Walk facing traffic

If there's no sidewalk, walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic, with your dog on the side away from cars.

7. Stay alert

Keep one earbud out, or skip the headphones entirely, so you can hear cars, bikes and other dogs. Watch for wildlife, which is more active at dawn and dusk.

8. Keep ID up to date

Make sure your dog's collar has a tag with your current phone number, and that their microchip details are registered and up to date. If your dog slips away in the dark, ID is the fastest way to get them home.

9. Carry the essentials

  • Poop bags
  • A small flashlight
  • Your phone
  • A few high-value treats for recall

Bonus: check gear for wear

Before winter, check that leash clips, buckles and harness straps are in good condition. A worn clip is more likely to fail when your dog lunges after a rabbit in the dark.
